In a few words

If you’re looking for Sunday lunch on the edge of Milan, at my place in San Donato Milanese, 1.3 km from the M3 terminus, there’s the Sunday menu: the Antipasto della Nonna with gnocco fritto, Emilian lasagna and Lombard risotto, then the traditional main course. 39 per person, cover charge extra, sittings at 12:00 and from 13:30.

The lunch

Three courses, on Sunday.

39 per person, cover charge extra. Portions are per person, so everyone gets the whole lunch.

Sunday in the glass

Two glasses for 11, and you drink them as you like.

The Lambrusco that celebrates and the still red Sangiovese di Romagna: both from the Via Emilia. You have them whenever you like, with the dish you prefer; and if the table drinks only water, that’s perfectly fine too.

When to arrive

The first sitting is the loveliest.

On Sundays I have two sittings: 12:00, and from 13:30 to 14:15. Almost everyone asks for 13:30, and it’s the time that fills up first. For those who choose midday, the first glass is on me.

  1. My tipFirst sitting12:00The table is yours until 13:30Bottle of Blanc de Blancs di Cleto ChiarliThe first glass is on meIf you book for 12:00 and sit down by 12:15, you’ll find a glass of Blanc de Blancs on your table, fresh, lean Emilian bubbles: one each. It’s my thank-you to those who choose midday.
    • You find a seat more easily: it’s the time that fills up last.
    • An hour and a half all for you: the right time for starter, first courses and main course.
    • With children it’s the right time: they eat at their usual time.
  2. Second sittingfrom 13:3013:30, 13:45, 14:00 or 14:15, until closing at 16:00
    • You take it easy, without watching the clock.
    • It’s the most requested and fills up first: book a few days ahead.

When on Sunday I have to say «it’s full»

  • Second sitting, from 13:309 in 10
  • First sitting, 12:00under 1 in 10

These are the online requests for Sunday lunch that I couldn’t accept in the past year.

My advice: book a few days ahead and choose 12:00. The first glass is on me, you eat without hurry, and at 13:30 you still have the whole Sunday ahead.

Questions

Questions about Sunday lunch

Where can I have Sunday lunch near Milan?

In San Donato Milanese, just past the southern edge of the city: 8.6 km from the Duomo and 1.3 km from the San Donato terminus of the yellow metro line M3. You’ll find public parking in the streets around the restaurant. The Sunday menu is 39 per person, and my whole menu is available too.

How long does it take from Milan?

From piazzale Corvetto about 6 minutes by car, from Santa Giulia about 8, from San Giuliano Milanese about 10: times measured with Google Maps on a Monday around six in the evening. By metro, take the yellow line to San Donato, then about 18 minutes on foot.

What’s in the Sunday lunch?

Three courses per person: the Antipasto della Nonna with gnocco fritto and the cured meats of the Via Emilia, two first courses with an Emilian lasagna and a Lombard risotto, and a traditional main course with roast potatoes. For those who don’t eat meat there are the Erbazzone di casa and the Viaggio Caseario lungo la Via Emilia. It costs 39 per person.

Is the cover charge included?

No: the cover charge is 3 per person for adults, with fresh bread and service. I tell you beforehand, so the bill has no surprises.

What’s special about 12:00?

It’s the midday toast: for those who book at 12:00 and sit down by 12:15, the first glass is on me, a Blanc de Blancs, the Emilian bubbles. One each. The table is yours until 13:30.

Are drinks included?

No, you choose them. If you like, two glasses at 11 per person, the Lambrusco and the Sangiovese, to drink whenever you prefer; or the Sunday bottle at 23: Sangiovese Superiore «Centurione», Lambrusco Grasparossa «Vigneto Cialdini» or Blanc de Blancs di Cleto Chiarli.

Does the menu change every Sunday?

Yes, the first courses and the main course: the lasagna, the risotto and the main course change with the weeks, the style doesn’t. If you want to know what I’m cooking this Sunday, write to me on WhatsApp.

Is there dessert?

Dessert is not in the menu: if you have a corner left, choose one of my homemade desserts from the dessert menu, like the Nonnamisù, the Zuppa Inglese or the Crostata dei Ricordi.

Do I have to take the Sunday menu?

No: on Sundays my whole menu is available too. Everyone at the table chooses what they like.

What time is best to book?

Early, and at 12:00. On Sundays I have two sittings: 12:00, with the table yours until 13:30, and from 13:30 to 14:15. The second is the most requested and fills up first; at 12:00 you find a seat more easily, and the first glass is on me.

How much do children pay?

25 in all, no cover charge. For children up to 10 years old I prepare a single plate with saffron risotto, cotoletta alla milanese and roast potatoes, then gelato and mineral water.

Can I book for a big group or a party?

Yes. For a birthday, a communion or a family party, see the parties page: there I prepare a tailor-made menu for you.

I don’t eat meat: can I take the Sunday menu?

Yes. Instead of the Antipasto della Nonna I bring you the Erbazzone di casa, savoury pastry with greens, fresh eggs and Parmigiano Reggiano 24 months; instead of the main course, the Viaggio Caseario lungo la Via Emilia, five cheeses from Romagna to Lombardy, with warm tigelle, red onions caramelised in Balsamico and pepper jam, in a single-person portion. Both are vegetarian and the price stays 39 per person. Tell me when you book or at the table.

What if I don’t fancy the two first courses?

I bring you just one, in a full portion: you choose which of the two first courses.

I have an allergy: can I take the menu?

Mention it in the intolerances question on the form and remind the waiter: I’ll tell you what I can change for you.

What if I don’t like a dish?

My Promessa holds: after the first forkfuls, just say so with a smile, and I’ll change it at no cost.

Where are you and how do I get there?

In Via Monte Bianco 33, San Donato Milanese, 1.3 km from the metro terminus M3 and a few minutes from Linate.
